Young Frankenstein is considered a classic. It does have some great moments and for fans of the orginal Frankenstein movies, there are some cool things, like the use of some of the original props from the laboratory. The cinematography/lighting is wonderful. And Mel Brooks’ direction was spot on. However, I have to say that I felt Blazing Saddles (another Mel Brooks’ film) was much more funny.
Be that as it may, the film is definitely worth watching. My favorite part is “Putting on the Ritz”. I won’t give away the details of this, because I don’t want to spoil it, but it did and still does make me laugh out loud every time I see it.
The film also marks the first major feature role for Terri Garr and also has the late, Peter Doyle as the monster. A cameo by Gene Hackman adds a nice touch as well. Gene Wilder is the main star. It also features Madeline Kahn and Kenneth Mars and the late Marty Feldman as Igor.
DVD extras include a documentary on the making of the movie, and some cast interviews as well as deleted scenes. These were all insightful and entertaining. I would give this 3.5 stars out of 5.
