Cloud Computing

eyeOS has released version 1.7 of their webhost based ‘desktop’. I installed this PHP package on my webhost a few weeks ago on version 1.6 and the upgrade to 1.7 was very easy — easier than a Word Press upgrade.

The software gives you a computing desktop in the ‘cloud’. Just log in from any browser, and you’ve got access to your computing desktop, with a basic set of office applications, like word processing, presentations, calendar, spreadsheet, contact manager and more.

My primary use has been for keeping a few documents that I need frequent access to like my ‘To Do’ list. Unfortunately, when using Opera as your browser, there are a few things that don’t quite work yet, but they are promising full support soon. Meanwhile I recommend FireFox 3.x. I’ve also tested it briefly with Google Chrome and it worked fine there.

I’m looking forward to seeing this open source OS develop and to see what third party applications are created for it.
