Well, looks like some nice things are happening with FreeNAS these days.
An IT specialty book publisher has a book on FreeNAS now. I don’t have a review copy, so I can’t attest to whether the book is any good or not, but there is an excerpt from the book here: Local User Management in FreeNAS
Anyone read this book? I’d be curious to see if it has any “how-to’s” in it. I also wonder how fresh the content is. FreeNAS is in such a state of flux. I wonder if this book is a bit premature. IT books in general, have a short shelf life, but a book about a beta, open source project seems to be especially vulnerable to being obsoleted quickly. I am guessing that the publisher is POD (Print on Demand) and that authors are getting little upfront money for their work. (Okay, Wikipedia confirms they are POD. I don’t know about compensation of authors though.)
Anyway, if anyone has read this, let me know what you think.
David,
I am Gary Sims, the author of Learning FreeNAS. It is true what you say that FreeNAS is still underdevelopment and as such things do change, however the basic principles of FreeNAS remain the same and as such the shelf life of this book isn’t as short as you might think.
With regards to the Publishers (Packt Publishing) they are an excellent organization who give some of the proceeds to their open source books to the project itself and so help its development. Also they are very good with their authors and we receive amble compensation and royalties for our work.
I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Gary
Hi Gary,
Thanks for writing. I’m glad Packt is a good organization and I wish you much success with your book!
