Wii is Contagious

So, Adam and I had dinner with Erich and Laura some months ago. Afterwards, we played bowling on their Wii. Then, I bought a Wii. And Adam bought a Wii. It’s a virus. It’s also been surprising how many of my coworkers are buying them too. It’s a game that appeals to all ages and all gaming skill levels.

GMail Attachment Feature

For years now, I have wondered why no email programs caught one of the most common email faux pas. Can you guess what it is? How many times have you either received, or worse, sent an email, promising an attachment and there was no attachment.

I kept thinking, how hard could it possibly be to scan the body of an email message and look for the words “attached” or “attachment” and if there was no attachment, give the user a damn warning message!?!? Well friends, GMail from Google has finally added this feature. To enable this feature, go to your GMail in your browser, select settings and find the Labs tab. Click it and scroll down to you find it.

I really love GMail. I wish it had folders, but that’s my only gripe.

Chinese Camera Accessories

One of the things that kept me from upgrading to the Canon 30D when it was released was that I had invested so much in accessories for my 350D (aka Rebel XT). When the 400D (Rebel XTi) came out, I thought I might upgrade to that since the cost difference was going to be small as all my accessories would work with it. I had arranged a sale of my old 350D to further defray the costs of the upgrade. Continue reading

Where to Buy Camera Gear

I have been thoroughly disappointed with the local camera stores in the Charlotte area. The largest chain store, Wolf/Ritz has a horrible selection and even worse prices, sometimes about 30% higher than they should be. And the best ‘mom and pop’ store, Charlotte Camera, has moved to the most distant reaches of Ballantyne. (I used to believe that I could get to about any part of Charlotte in no more than 35 minutes. Not anymore!)

So, most of my purchases have been online. The predominant vendor I’ve used is B&H Photo Video. They are, by sales volume, the largest camera equipment store in the world. They have a very large selection. They have very large warehouses so they have more in stock. Their web site is the best of any photography store.

That said, there are times I have had to use another vendor. I needed a set of barn doors for my lights and to this day, it is still not in stock at B&H. I finally broke down and ordered them from Adorama. One thing to watch out for with Adorama is that you can order directory through their web site, or sometimes you can order through Amazon from Adorama — and the prices may be different depending on which you do! So it pays to always check both to see which has the lower price.

Another caveat of online buying is to avoid being lured by the ‘too good to be true’ price. You’ve probably seen these prices. You might be surfing the web and some google adwords ad shows an incredible price on a camera. For example, I’ve seen 50% off the going rate on a Canon Rebel Xti.. There are dozens and dozens of places that are bait and switch scammers. Before doing business with any online retailer, check their ratings and feedback on Reseller Ratings.

New Harry Potter Movie

My friend Eric saw the new movie and said it was not good. The adaptation of the 900 page book simply didn’t work. He’s says it is very disjointed. Too much had to be cut out. And if you didn’t read the book, you will not understand what is going on.  Looks like I may wait until a special extended edition is released on DVD before I see this one. Anyone else seen it and have an opinion?
